Each time a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
